Sustenance and Sanctuary
1 Samuel 21:1 – 22:5
Today we find Yahweh’s anointed King David in desperate need of food and refuge from his enemies. Just as he found sustenance through God’s provision of the showbread, and sanctuary even in the valley of the shadow of death from Saul’s emissary Doeg and the Philistine King Achish, today we would do well to recognize that God is still in the habit of meeting the needs of his covenant children. This most commonly occurs in small, everyday ways and in the valleys of life rather than on the mountaintops. All of this anticipates the final consummation of our sanctuary and sustenance which find their yes and amen in Christ.
