Psalms 89:1-52

Psalm 89 is a psalm about the gap between the promises of God as written in Scripture and our present experience of those promises. Reflecting upon 2 Samuel 7, the Psalmist praises God for his covenant promises to David, but expresses confusion, grief, and discouragement at the present situation in which God’s promises appear to have failed. The psalm teaches us to take our doubt, confusion, grief, and frustration to God in prayer and, in the larger context of the New Testament, to trust that God has, is, and will fulfill his promises in Jesus in his own time.
