1 Samuel 5:1-7:2

In the story of the capture of the ark of the covenant by the Philistines, we come to understand that the whole earth belongs to God and his hand is at work over all people.  While we may be more sophisticated in the creation of the idols of our hearts than they were, nonetheless our idols are as powerless as our God is powerful.  There’s no better place to see the heavy hand of God’s justice and his holiness than at the cross.  But thanks be to God that, as we humble ourselves before him, he is gracious and merciful to forgive and lift us up.
