1 Samuel 4:1-22

Today’s passage treats the end of the era of Eli and his wicked sons, accompanied by the capture of the ark of the covenant by the Philistines in a severe military rout of Israel.  While at face value this is a very dark and despondent chapter in their history, we see that God is still at work to accomplish his purposes that the people cannot thwart.  In even greater measure, through that darkest event in all of history — the crucifixion of our Savior — we see evidence of our gracious God working out his plan of redemption, for his own glory.
