The Audacity of Faith and Ignorance
1 Samuel 14:1-52
Context often determines the meaning of words. The narrative in today’s passage displays two types of audacity. Jonathan manifests a positive audacious confidence in God’s faithfulness, in contrast to Saul’s negative audacious ignorance of spiritual matters and the purposes of God. The call upon us today is not to aim to be like Jonathan or avoid being like Saul. Rather we who are in Christ are called to have faith that is not presumptuous, yet is confident in God’s goodness and faithfulness to us.
