Covenant Confrontation

1 Samuel 12:1-25

Today’s text chronicles a ceremony of covenant renewal of God with his people.  It comes at an inflection point in the history of Israel as they transition from the era of judges and prophets, to the era of the monarchy.  The message to Israel, as it is the same for us today, is that there are covenant blessings that accrue in response to obedience and, conversely, covenant curses that attend disobedience.  We ought not be surprised when we sin.  Yet still more important is the gracious truth that our covenant-keeping God has borne our sin himself in the crucifixion of Jesus and binds us to himself with covenant love.
